Interim Superintendent Bill Esterbrook has announced that Escalante Middle School received an “all clear” from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 3:21 p.m. following the bomb threat that was reported earlier this afternoon.   Staff members have been permitted to re-enter the building and the building will remain open until 4:30 today.

Interim Superintendent Bill Esterbrook has announced that a bomb threat has been  reported at Escalante Middle School this afternoon at approximately 1:45 p.m.    The school has been evacuated and students and staff have been directed to the southeast corner of the football field where parents and busses will pick up the children to be transported home.

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education approved the superintendent contract of Daniel J. Snowberger on Monday, April 23, 2012, at its regular board meeting.  Mr. Snowberger will take 9-R's lead position effective July 1, 2012, following a two-week transition period with Interim Superintendent Bill Esterbrook.

Pre-school and Kindergarten Spring Registration for the 2012-2013 school year will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012. Registration will be from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at all elementary schools. Parents must provide their child’s immunization information and a birth certificate. Parents should also bring a utility bill to show proof of residency. The Durango School District 9-R Summer Academy is currently seeking current employees and community members interested in teaching summer courses. Instructors in the Summer Academy Program set their own curriculum and work with students who are excited about their subject! We especially need science and modern languages teachers. Summer Academy Instructors do not have to have a teaching credential as this is an enrichment program.

Escalante Middle School proudly announces its intent to become a vibrant member of the Expeditionary Learning network for the 2012-2013 school year. After a year-long exploration of Expeditionary Learning (EL) and International Baccalaureate (IB) models, the staff of Escalante overwhelmingly (82%) approved the EL model. EL is exemplified by project-based, interdisciplinary learning with emphasis on high levels of student engagement, achievement, and character development.

To all Durango 9-R Staff and Community Members,

The school board held two meetings in December to work on the Superintendent Search. On December 9, 2011, the board met to review the six proposals that were submitted by Superintendent Search Firms in response to the Request for Proposals (RFP) that the board sent out in the fall. A rubric, developed from what was requested in the RFP, was used to evaluate the proposals and the board narrowed the field down to three finalists.

Miller Middle School invites parents to attend a Middle Years Program International Baccalaureate (MYP IB) informational session from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8th or Thursday, January 19th in Miller Middle School’s auditorium.   Miller staff will introduce the MYP program, and the history of its year long process. Following the brief overview, we will take parents' questions and ask them to share their input. All are welcome.  

Unofficial results for the recent election indicate that Kristy Rodri (District A), Carla Mulkey (District B), and Wendy Rice (District G) have won the three contested seats for 9-R’s Board of  Education.  In addition, Julie Levy (District D) retained her seat on the board, after running unopposed.  Each newly elected board member will serve a four-year term and will be sworn in at the next board meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, after the election has been certified.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., a heat lamp in the tortoise terrarium caused a straw basket to catch on fire.  The fire was contained to the basket only but smoke circulated through the building.  Due to the smoke going throughout the building, and in an effort to keep our students and staff members safe, school will be canceled today, Friday, November 4, 2011.

School will resume as normal at Monday, November 7, 2011.

The School Board Meeting previously scheduled for Tuesday, September 20, 2011, has been cancelled. - - - - - - - - - - - - The school board will be conducting a Board Work Session with community members on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at 5:00 p.m., in the 9-R Board Room in the Administration Building. 9-R has just received air quality test results from the Environmental Lab that re-tested air samples this morning at Durango High School. Their report indicates that intensive cleaning has reduced mold spore counts to within recommended levels. Therefore, Durango High School will reopen for classes on Friday, May 20th.

If DHS is open on Thursday, the Thursday afternoon AP exam, as well as all future exams, will be at DHS. If DHS remains closed on Thursday, all Thursday AP exams and the Friday morning AP exams will be at Miller. If DHS is open on Friday, the Friday afternoon AP exam will be at DHS.
