Hug or high-five a school counselor during National School Counseling Week

Durango School District (DSD) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) are pleased to celebrate National School Counseling Week, Feb. 3-7, 2025. This event focuses public attention on the valuable contributions made by our district's 14 school counselors and the work they do each and every day to support the success and well being of our students.

Board adopts inclusive-symbols resolutions to support students and staff

At the Jan. 28 Regular Board Meeting held at the Impact Career Innovation Center, the Durango School District 9-R Board of Education voted unanimously to pass two resolutions affirming its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) for all students, staff, and community members.

Cook Center Mental Health Series: February classes

Need help in supporting your student's well-being? We are offering FREE webinars throughout the school year. Topics this month include: child anxiety, navigating divorce when children are involved, understanding eating disorders, supporting your child's mental health, loneliness in children, and more.

Early Access applications available Feb. 1

Durango School District has the opportunity to accelerate highly advanced gifted children under age 5 for kindergarten and/or under age 6 for first grade. This Early Access is for those eligible students if their birthdays fall after October 1. It is intended to support students who are evaluated to be exceptional in aptitude/cognitive reasoning, academics, school readiness, and motivation.

Thirty-one motivated student leaders can produce a lot of quality events and activities over the course of one year. Durango High School Student Council makes leadership look like a lot of fun. How about pie-in-the-face assemblies, Barbie Day, and a Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament?

Superintendent's Message

Welcome to beautiful Durango and La Plata County! Our schools – and our community – are committed to ensuring all students reach proficiency in all content areas as well as have a high level of social-emotional well-being. Our primary objective in the Durango School District is to help every student achieve their life's purpose through Portrait of a Graduate. This is our district's "north star." It inspires students to find their Ikigai. This is a Japanese concept that incorporates four essential criteria: what you love (your passion), what the world needs (your mission), what you are good at (your vocation), and what you can get paid for (your profession). East meets West with this ancient philosophy in a modern mountain town.
