This event is open to everyone: students, families, and community members who want to honor Native American heritage. District schools have students representing over 20 tribes from across the United States.
“We want our students to be proud of who they are,” said Orlando Griego, Title VI Native American Education Program Manager. Title VI utilizes funding from the federal government in order to provide services for our Native American students and families in the district.
Hosted by the district’s Title VI program, the event will be led by Griego, along with Native American cultural liaisons and dedicated teachers, who will explain the significance of each game before the students begin. Each game is a story that teaches a skill. The games also impart lessons in culture and history. Participants will engage in traditional games such as Double Ball, Ring the Stick, Rock in Fist, and Arrow Throw activities that promote teamwork, skill, and cultural pride.
The Native Traditional Games event builds on the momentum of physical education classes that introduced students to traditional Native American games, fostering engagement and excitement around their cultural history.
“This is a great opportunity for our students to participate,” said Griego. “We wanted to have this event on Indigenous Peoples' Day to celebrate the resilience of our people.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating and to dress warmly for the evening. Food and drinks will be provided.
