Durango School District extends its heartfelt gratitude to the voters of La Plata County for supporting our schools through the passage of the 2024 Investing in Our Schools Bond. This crucial decision by our community paves the way for long-term improvements that will benefit students and staff across our district.
"We’re so grateful to our community for saying ‘yes’ to investing in our schools," said Superintendent Dr. Karen Cheser. "With the passing of the bond, we’re excited about what this means for our students and staff – not just today, but for years to come. Your support allows us to keep growing, improving, and creating a safe, inspiring place for every student in Durango. Thank you, La Plata County voters, for being such an important part of our future."
The district will now refer to the 4A Bond measure as the 2024 Investing in Our Schools Bond, to distinguish it from the 2020 4A Bond. According to tallies as of Wednesday morning, the bond passed by a large margin, with 61.3% of voters (15,088) in favor to 38.8% opposed (9,537).
The bond allows the district to implement improvements and expansions for its 11 schools as identified through extensive community feedback, including enhanced facilities, enriched learning environments, and continued alignment with district priorities outlined on our bond information page.
“This bond is a dream come true for our district, and we couldn’t be more excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work,” said Chris Coleman, Chief Operations Officer for the district. “It’s all about creating the best spaces and opportunities for our students and staff. As a leader on the district’s Long-Term Planning Committee, I want you to know we’re dedicated to making sure every dollar counts. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way, so you can see exactly how your support is shaping the future of our schools. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.”
Durango School District 9-R remains committed to transparency and will provide regular updates on progress and investments made possible by this bond, ensuring that the community can see the direct impact of their support. Updates will be shared through the district’s website, newsletters, social media, and press releases to local media outlets. Subscribe to the district’s newsletter here.
The district invites people to join the 2024 Citizen Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC). This is a group of volunteers who make sure school bond funds are spent as promised. Their role is to be the eyes and ears of the community. They oversee the process, validate that spending conforms to ballot language, and review the budget. To express interest, fill out the form I’m interested in the 2024 Citizen Bond Oversight Committee. CBOC volunteers do not need to have children who currently attend Durango School District; but they must provide proof that they live in La Plata County by submitting a home address.
